Pendeltåg commuter rail / Roslagsbanan and Saltsjöbanan

Commuter trains and the local railways use the same flat SL fare as the metro. No station has a ticket machine - bring the SL app or a contactless card. At gateless stations, tap the green platform pole before boarding.

Saltsjöbanan does not reach Slussen

Saltsjöbanan is suspended between Slussen and Saltsjö-Järla for the Slussen rebuild. On the city side you start from the bus terminal at Slussen metro station, where replacement bus 25B takes over. SL expects full service back in 2028.

How to ride

Sort your ticket out before you get there

Buy a ticket in the SL app, or have your contactless card out and ready - there are no ticket machines at the stations.

At larger stations, tap in at the gate

Hold your card or phone against the green pad on the gate - a green light and the gates opening means the ticket is valid.

No gates? Tap the platform pole

Tap the green platform pole at gateless stations before boarding. Most poles cannot read app tickets - activate those in the app.

You may have to open the door yourself

If the button by the door is lit green, press it to open. That is how Roslagsbanan always works, and pendeltåg in summer.

At an inspection, show what you started with

If you tapped in with a bank card, tap that same card on the inspector's reader; with the app, hand the phone over.

Heads-up

The airport station gates need an extra passage ticket

Pendeltåg line 40 calls at Arlanda Airport, but getting through the gates at the airport station needs an extra passage ticket on top of your SL fare (under-18s pass free). Tapping a bank card only ever buys a plain single, so buy the passage ticket in the SL app or at a staffed counter - including the service desk at Arlanda station itself.
Mixing card and phone bills you for two trips

If you pay by tapping, stick to one thing for the whole journey. Tap in with the plastic and then use the same card in Apple Pay when you change trains, and SL treats them as two different cards - and bills you for two trips.
