Saltsjöbanan does not reach Slussen
Saltsjöbanan is suspended between Slussen and Saltsjö-Järla for the Slussen rebuild. On the city side you start from the bus terminal at Slussen metro station, where replacement bus 25B takes over. SL expects full service back in 2028.
How to ride
- 1Sort your ticket out before you get thereBuy a ticket in the SL app, or have your contactless card out and ready - there are no ticket machines at the stations.
- 2At larger stations, tap in at the gateHold your card or phone against the green pad on the gate - a green light and the gates opening means the ticket is valid.
- 3No gates? Tap the platform poleTap the green platform pole at gateless stations before boarding. Most poles cannot read app tickets - activate those in the app.
- 4You may have to open the door yourselfIf the button by the door is lit green, press it to open. That is how Roslagsbanan always works, and pendeltåg in summer.
- 5At an inspection, show what you started withIf you tapped in with a bank card, tap that same card on the inspector's reader; with the app, hand the phone over.

Facilities
Lifts (step-free)（Limited）Every station with stairs also has a lift. The gap between platform and train is wide, so wheelchair users should ask for ramp assistance - at the service desk at staffed stations, or by waiting at the ramp sign on the platform at unstaffed ones. For Arlanda, Knivsta and Bålsta you must book at least 30 minutes ahead.

Operating hoursCommuter trains start between 04:00 and 05:00 and run until about 01:30. Frequency depends on the stretch but is never worse than every 30 minutes, and through the central section - where any line will do - trains come every few minutes during the day. Roslagsbanan runs from early morning until about 01:00, roughly four times an hour in the daytime and every half hour in the evenings and at weekends (sparser on the northern Kårsta branch). Saltsjöbanan also runs from early morning to about 01:00, every 20 minutes for most of the day and every half hour late in the evening.

The airport station gates need an extra passage ticket
Pendeltåg line 40 calls at Arlanda Airport, but getting through the gates at the airport station needs an extra passage ticket on top of your SL fare (under-18s pass free). Tapping a bank card only ever buys a plain single, so buy the passage ticket in the SL app or at a staffed counter - including the service desk at Arlanda station itself.

Mixing card and phone bills you for two trips
If you pay by tapping, stick to one thing for the whole journey. Tap in with the plastic and then use the same card in Apple Pay when you change trains, and SL treats them as two different cards - and bills you for two trips.
