Stockholm

A capital spread across fourteen islands. Its metro is called 'the world's longest art gallery'.

Tunnelbanan (the Metro)

A metro with no ticket machines: tap a bank card on the green gate reader and that is your 75-minute single, no touch out. Three lines and 100 stations all meet at T-Centralen, and at weekends the trains run all night.

How to ride

  1. 1
Buy your ticket at the gate reader
Tap a contactless card or phone on the green reader at the gate. There are no ticket machines, so there is no queue to join.
  2. 2
    Tap just the one card
Take the card out of your wallet rather than tapping the whole wallet, and never swap between card and phone mid-journey.
  3. 3
    Do not tap out
At your destination just walk out through the gates - the SL system has no touch out.
  4. 4
Make your changes within 75 minutes
The ticket runs 75 minutes from your first tap. Within that window you can change to any other SL service, not just the metro.
  5. 5
Paying cash? Use the staffed booth
Cash is taken only at the staffed booths in the metro and on commuter rail - buses and commuter ferries take none at all.
  6. 6
Show an inspector the same card
At an inspection you must tap the same card you started your journey with on the inspector's device.

Heads-up

  • A failed charge blocks your card at the gates

Contactless fares are charged the next day or later. If the payment fails for lack of funds, SL blocks the card and it stops opening the gates. Top up, tap once to clear the debt, then tap again to travel.

  • A contactless tap cannot pay for a companion

A contactless card buys a ticket for you alone. SL's conditions require you to use your own personal card and say you can only pay for yourself, so you cannot tap twice to cover someone else. A companion without their own card must buy a ticket in the app or at a staffed booth - travelling without one risks the 1,850 kr penalty.
