Cookies and third-party requests

This page sets out the cookies used by Starna (this site) and the information transmitted from your device to parties other than this site.
Starna provides no account registration, no login and no browsing history. One cookie is used, for a display setting, and transmission from your device to a third party occurs in only three cases: when a map is displayed, for aggregate traffic measurement that does not identify you, and for the anti-spam check on the contact form. All of this is disclosed below.
Cookies used
Starna uses exactly one cookie.

This cookie is set only when you change the text size away from its default in the header menu, and it is deleted when you set it back. Browsing alone sets nothing.
The value stored is a short token such as l (large) and contains no information that identifies you.
Your display language is not stored in a cookie. It is determined by the URL (Japanese at the plain address, English under /en).
Technologies not used
Starna uses none of the following.
- Advertising and retargeting tags
- Social media embeds that track visitors
- Any identifier for a reader, or any record of behaviour across sites
- Analytics tools that rely on cookies or identifiers stored on your device (Google Analytics and the like)
To improve our content and page speed, Starna uses one form of aggregate traffic measurement that does not identify readers: Cloudflare Web Analytics. It uses no cookies and no device storage, and assigns no per-reader identifier. The recipient and the information transmitted are disclosed in the next section.
Transmission to third parties
Information is transmitted from your device to a party other than this site in three cases only: when a map is displayed, by the traffic-measurement beacon, and by the anti-spam check on the contact form (Cloudflare Turnstile). The following is disclosed in accordance with Article 27-12 of Japan's Telecommunications Business Act.

Lines and stations are drawn by Starna, but the base map tiles beneath them are served by the recipient above. The request is necessary to display the map and serves no advertising or analytics purpose. It is nonetheless disclosed here, as it is one of the routes by which a reader's IP address reaches a party other than this site.
The recipient sets no cookies; this has been verified by direct measurement. However, its responses include an error-reporting directive, and only if a map tile fails to load will your browser send details of that error to an endpoint operated by Cloudflare, Inc. Nothing is sent when tiles load successfully, and no cookie or identifier is included.
Unless you open a page containing a map, no map-tile request occurs.

The recipient sets no cookies and uses no device storage such as localStorage. No per-reader identifier is assigned, and Starna receives no record that could identify an individual. It runs on every page.
Anti-spam check on the contact form (Cloudflare Turnstile)

This occurs only when you open the Contact page. Cloudflare states that Turnstile uses no cookies and does not retain the signals used for the check. Starna does not use the optional pre-clearance mode (the cf_clearance cookie).
Providers your device does not contact
The following are accessed only from Starna's servers; no communication with your device occurs.
- Content database (Supabase) — pages are assembled server-side and delivered as finished HTML
- Exchange rate API — the rates used for approximate fare conversions are retrieved server-side, once a day
Refusing and deleting cookies
Your browser settings allow you to refuse cookies and to delete those already stored. The steps differ by browser; please consult your browser's help pages.
Refusing or deleting cookies does not impair your use of this site. Your text size choice is simply no longer retained. Your display language is determined by the URL and is therefore unaffected by your cookie settings.
After following a link to an external site
Starna carries a large number of links to external sites, including the official sites of transit operators. Once you follow a link and arrive at another company's site, that company's cookie policy and privacy policy apply, and Starna has no control over them.
Why no consent banner is displayed
Under Japanese law, disclosure of third-party transmissions is sufficient. Starna also sets no cookies for tracking purposes.
If you are in the EU or the UK: the textsize cookie is strictly necessary to deliver the display preference you selected, and map tile requests are necessary to render a map you chose to view. Neither is used for profiling or advertising.
Cookies set by our hosting provider
Starna is to be published on Cloudflare Pages (Cloudflare, Inc., United States). That company may set its own cookies for the purpose of network security. The cookies actually issued in the production environment will be confirmed and added to the table above.
