Stockholm

A capital spread across fourteen islands. Its metro is called 'the world's longest art gallery'.

Pendelbåtarna (SL commuter boats)

An SL ticket covers the water: four commuter boat lines, plus the archipelago ships to the Vaxholm area year round. Cash works nowhere - boat or pier. Line 82 taps ashore before boarding; the rest tap on board.

How to ride

  1. 1
Sort out your ticket before you board
Boats take no cash. Have a contactless card or a ticket in the SL app before you head to the pier.
  2. 2
Line 82: tap ashore before boarding
On line 82, tap at the gates at Slussen and Allmänna gränd; off-peak, tap the SL-stolpe pole on the quay instead.
  3. 3
Lines 80, 84 and 89: tap on board
There are no gates ashore on these three - tap the reader on board as you step on, and check that it lights up green.
  4. 4
Raise the semaphore at small piers
Fold the round signboard up to vertical while you wait, then fold it down again once the boat has docked.
  5. 5
Check where your SL ticket stops
An SL ticket only covers you as far as the Vaxholm area; beyond that, buy a Waxholmsbolaget ticket on board.
  6. 6
Hand back the paper ticket as you leave
On archipelago boats you always get a paper ticket, even when tapping an SL ticket. Hand it to the crew as you disembark.

Heads-up

  • Line 82 boards at Räntmästartrappan, about 100 m from Slussen

As part of the Slussen rebuild, the Djurgården ferry (line 82) berth on the Slussen side moved about 100 metres from its original spot back in 2016. SL now names that stop Räntmästartrappan, so heading only for the Slussen station sign can leave you short of the quay. Building work around Slussen runs until 2028, so the walking route itself may change again.

  • SL tickets are not valid on southern archipelago lines 17, 18 and 19

Even though they leave from the same Strömkajen quay, Waxholmsbolaget's lines 17, 18 and 19 - the ones heading to the southern archipelago such as Utö and Nämdö via Baggensstäket - do not accept SL tickets. Check the line number before you step aboard and buy a Waxholmsbolaget ticket if needed. The one exception is low season, 14 September to 29 April, when an SL period ticket valid 30 days or more covers the whole network.
