Street bikes and e-scooters here mean two apps: Voi and Bolt hold the city permits, with no counters and no cash. The e-scooter trap is parking - every quayside and 13 spots, Gamla Stan included, are no-return zones.

How to ride

    Sign up in the Voi or Bolt app
    Both operators rent only through their own apps - no kiosks, no counters. Voi's Stockholm minimum age is 18.

    Find a vehicle on the map and scan its QR
    Pick a nearby bike or scooter on the in-app map, then scan the QR code on the vehicle to unlock it.

    Ride in the bike lanes
    Ride in the bike lanes, not on the footway - sidewalk riding is illegal in Sweden, and so is carrying a passenger.
  4. 4
    Decide where you'll park before you set off
    End rides at a rack or a marked bay on the map. You can't finish along the quaysides or in parts of the centre such as Gamla Stan.

    End the ride in the app
    Park, then end the trip in the app - with Voi you also have to submit a photo of the parked vehicle.

Heads-up

  • You cannot end a ride on the quaysides or in Gamla Stan

    The places you cannot end a rented e-scooter ride are exactly where tourists go. On top of every quayside in the city, Stockholm names 13 spots - among them Gamla Stan (except Munkbroleden and Skeppsbron), Kungsträdgården, the lower level of Sergels torg, Medborgarplatsen, and the City Hall courtyard and park. Pick your drop-off point before you unlock.

  • The rules are the same as for a bicycle

    Swedish law treats these as bicycles: no riding on sidewalks or footpaths, and no passengers. Helmets are compulsory under 15 (optional for adults, though the transport agency urges everyone to wear one). After dark you need front and rear lights plus reflectors, and riding under the influence is prohibited. In some parts of the city, rented scooters are automatically throttled to walking pace.

  • Voi asks for a parking photo when you end the ride

    Voi requires a photo of the parked vehicle when you end a ride. Blurry shots, or a scooter blocking the footway, trigger a warning - and repeated offences bring a fee that Voi says is charged only after several warnings and is never refunded (the amount isn't published). Step back far enough to capture the whole vehicle and its surroundings.
