Oslo Bysykkel (city bikes) & rental e-scooters

The bike share is dock-based, renting 05:00-01:00. It is app-only, no cash - and the cards the operator names are Visa and Mastercard. E-scooters come from three licensed operators and stop renting from 23:00 to 05:00.

How to ride

    Install an app and register
    Register in the Oslo Bysykkel or Ruter app; riders must be 18. A foreign phone number works if you pick the country code by hand.

    Buy the product that fits your trip
    Pick pay-as-you-go or the 72-hour visitor product, in the app or on the website; payment comes from your registered card.
  3. 3
    Unlock a bike at a docking station
    Find a station with bikes on the map and unlock. Blue bikes are pedal-only; the white ones are electric and priced separately.
  4. 4
    Ride in the bike lanes
    Stay on the cycle tracks or the roadway. One rider only, 95 kg total, and the terms forbid forests and off-road surfaces.
  5. 5
    Dock it and wait for the confirmation
    Push the bike's front firmly into a free lock and wait for the app to confirm; a blinking red light means that lock is faulty.

Heads-up

  • A return isn't finished until the app confirms

    A return isn't finished until the app says so. If you walk away from a bike that never registered and it stays missing for 14 days, you get an invoice - NOK 5,000 for a pedal bike, NOK 10,000 for an electric one, and up to NOK 15,000 if it turns up badly damaged. A blinking red light beside a lock means that lock is broken, so use another. Push the front wheel in firmly, wait about ten seconds, and if it still won't take, photograph the bike's name and the lock number and send it to support.

  • No rentals between 01:00 and 05:00, but you can still dock

    Between 01:00 and 05:00 there is no shared vehicle to rent at all. City rules stop scooter rentals at 23:00 and the city bikes can only be unlocked until 01:00, so plan a night bus or a taxi for the way back from a late evening. Returning is the exception - you can dock a bike in any free lock even while the system is closed for the night.

  • Don't park a rented scooter in an Oslo Bysykkel rack

    Don't end a rented scooter ride in an Oslo Bysykkel rack: the city's recommended parking spots include bicycle racks "but not Oslo Bysykkel's" - the one place singled out and excluded (guidance, not a bylaw clause). The city's outright "do not" list is: no passengers, no riding under the influence (the same 0.2 limit as for driving) and no rentals under 15; on footways, pedestrian streets, parks and squares you are told to keep to walking pace or push the scooter. The city can impose no-riding, no-parking and slow zones at any time, so read the shading on the app's map before you set off.
