Oslo

A capital at the head of a fjord. The local habit: buy your ticket in the app before you board.

No gates, only spot checks - and no tap-to-ride either: Ruter has no open-loop contactless. One ticket from the Ruter app or a Reisekort card covers the metro, trams, buses, harbour boats and Vy's local trains alike. Only buses and boats sell anything on board - cash only, and dearer than buying ahead. A ticket you cannot show at an inspection, flat battery included, counts as no ticket. The one tap-a-bank-card ride is Flytoget, the airport train; the Bygdøy museum ferry is the other exception - a separate company taking no Ruter ticket.
