EAV and Trenitalia (Circumvesuviana, Linea 2)

Naples's trains belong to two companies, EAV and Trenitalia, and ANM's EUR 1.30 city ticket is not valid on either. Their contactless systems are separate too, and Pompeii has one station on each of the two networks.

How to ride

    Buy the ticket that matches your destination
    Buy at a station counter, a machine, a tobacconist or in an app; the fare band depends on the town you get off in.
  2. 2
    Stamp a paper ticket before you board
    Feed it into a validator at the gates or on the platform; a digital ticket validates itself at the train's scheduled departure.
  3. 3
    Riding on a card means tapping in and tapping out
    Use the same card both times; forget the tap out and the system charges the maximum fare.
  4. 4
    Keep the ticket until you are out of the station
    Inspectors board the train; on a card, show it and give the first six and last four digits (EAV) or the last four (Trenitalia).

Heads-up

  • There are two Pompeii stations

    Two companies run trains to Pompeii. EAV's Circumvesuviana serves Pompei Scavi/Villa dei Misteri, while Trenitalia's regional trains serve Pompei - different stations, different tickets and different contactless systems. When Trenitalia advertises tap-to-ride on the "Napoli - Pompei" route it means the latter, so check which station your hotel or tour is naming before you buy.

  • You cannot buy on board at Centrale or Garibaldi

    At Napoli Centrale, Napoli Piazza Garibaldi, Napoli Afragola, Aversa, Caserta, Salerno and Benevento, buying on board is not permitted at all. Board without a ticket there and you count as fare-dodging even if you go to the conductor yourself. From other stations inside Naples you can still buy on board for a EUR 5.00 surcharge, as long as you approach the conductor as soon as you get on.

  • Trains stop on strike days

    Transport strikes in Italy are called for specific dates, and both EAV and Trenitalia are affected. The Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport publishes the calendar of announced strikes, so check it there before you plan a day trip. How many trains run, and during which hours, is decided operator by operator.
