Naples

A great port city beneath Mount Vesuvius. Even the metro - and its tickets - splits by company here.

Taxi and NCC (private hire)

Take one at a rank, or order by phone or app. The city sets fixed prices, a driver cannot refuse one you ask for before the ride starts, and while it applies the meter reads F0.00.

The EUR 6.00 shared taxi runs only to the end of 2026

The EUR 6.00 per person shared taxi between the airport, Napoli Centrale and Molo Beverello rests on a 2019 scheme the city has extended several times, at irregular intervals - May 2022, January 2024, December 2025. The current order dates from December 2025 and runs out on 31 December 2026; if it is not renewed the price goes with it. Drivers wait at the dedicated bays until three passengers are aboard before setting off.

How to ride

  1. 1
Take one at a rank, or call
Where cars or passengers wait at a rank, no driver may pick you up within 100 m of it - unless you called the radio, 081 2222.
  2. 2
Ask for the fixed price before you start
A driver cannot refuse when you ask, and must hand you a receipt showing the route and the amount before setting off.
  3. 3
Say before you start if you will pay by card
The city's rules let a driver fit a card terminal but do not require one, so carry cash as well.
  4. 4
    Check what the meter shows
On a fixed price it reads F0.00; on the meter it starts as the car moves off and must be shown to you when it stops.
  5. 5
Take the receipt when you get out
One must be issued on request; note the four-digit C.P. number on the door, which any complaint needs.

Estimates use exchange rates as of September 5, 2026

A licensed taxi is white and carries a four-digit C.P. number on its doors and inside the cabin. Besides the ranks you can call the radio dispatch (Consortaxi 081 2222 or 081 202020, around the clock) or use an app - Uber, FREE NOW, itTaxi and Wetaxi all work here. Whether Uber will dispatch a taxi is contradicted across Uber's own pages - its airport page answers no, while its blog announcing the launch of Uber Taxi in Naples in September 2020 still stands. What certainly runs here are its NCC cars, Black and Van, so open the app to see whether a taxi option appears. NCC private-hire cars are booking-only, may not wait at public ranks and will not stop for a raised hand, though the city may set aside separate NCC bays at the airport, the port and the stations. The ordinary metered fare carries a 10% discount in four cases - rides to hospitals, disabled passengers, women travelling alone between 22:00 and 06:00, and unaccompanied passengers over 70. It does not apply to the fixed prices.

Heads-up

  • Do not go with a driver who approaches you

In February 2026 the city police, working partly in plain clothes, ran an operation in piazza Garibaldi and around the airport and caught four drivers carrying passengers without authorisation; they report the trade is growing through social-media offers and handed-out flyers. A licensed taxi is white, as the city's vehicle rules require, and shows a four-digit C.P. number on its doors and inside the cabin. Note that number before you get in and you can complain afterwards, using the city's form, to [email protected].

  • A ride out of Naples can be refused

A driver is under no obligation to take you outside the city, so for Pompeii or Sorrento expect to ask more than one car at the rank; a refusal is not misconduct. If a driver does agree, runs the meter and will come back empty, the price of the whole ride is double the amount shown on the meter, which runs at half rate for it - it is not the return leg alone that doubles, so check the figure at the end and double that. Supplements are charged on top. The tariff sheet halves the rate instead if you keep the car and ride back in it. Where a one-way fixed price exists for your destination, asking for it before you set off is the readable option.
