Metropolitana di Napoli and the funiculars

Tap a ticket or a bank card on the reader at the gate. A single ticket covers one vehicle, and the metro and the funiculars take tickets at different prices, so changing between them needs the 90-minute integrated one.

    Three northern Line 1 stations are shut until 13 September

    Track renewal has closed Piscinola/Scampia, Chiaiano and Frullone on Line 1 until 13 September. Trains run only between Colli Aminei and Centro Direzionale. A replacement bus, NAV METRO L1, links the three closed stations with Policlinico every 10 minutes or so from 06:00 to 23:40. One-way trains still cover the closed stretch morning and evening - out of Piscinola between 06:00 and 08:00, and back from Colli Aminei between 21:49 and 23:31, later still on Friday and Saturday.

    Four secondary Line 1 exits are shut until 6 September

    The secondary exits at Montecalvario, Montedonzelli, via dell'Erba and Rione Alto II are closed until 6 September. The exit nearest your destination may not be usable, so check the station signs before heading up.

How to ride

    Get a ticket before you ride
    Buy at a machine, an ANM Point, a tabacchi or in an app. Metro and funicular tickets differ; tapping a card needs none.
  2. 2
    Tap the reader at the gate to enter
    Hold the ticket or card against the reader by the gate. If it is missing or broken, write the date and time on the ticket by hand.
  3. 3
    Tap again at every change
    Line 1 to a funicular or Line 6 counts as another vehicle. A single ticket covers one, so use the 90-minute ticket or a second.
  4. 4
    Tap out with the same card
    Tapped in with a bank card? Tap again on the way out. A ticket needs no exit tap, but keep it until you leave the station.

Heads-up

  • The funicular ticket is not valid on the metro

    Within ANM itself the metro ticket and the funicular ticket are different, and so are the prices. Line 1 and Line 6 cost 1,50 EUR - shown as Corsa singola liv.2 on machines and in the apps - while the funiculars and ANM's buses cost 1,30 EUR (liv.1). The cheaper one is not a valid title on the metro, so an inspector treats it as travelling without a ticket, and the penalty is the higher one too.

  • Museo and Piazza Cavour connect, but tickets do not

    Museo and Piazza Cavour are joined by an underground passage, but the tickets are not. Line 2 from Piazza Cavour is a Trenitalia railway, not ANM, and an ANM single does not cover it even though it costs the same 1,50 EUR - an ANM ticket is good only on ANM vehicles. Its contactless system is separate too, and ANM's Tap&Go will not open those gates. To use both, buy an integrated ticket - 1,80 EUR for 90 minutes, 5,40 EUR for the day.

  • Tap in and out with the same card or the same phone

    If you ride on a bank card, tap in and tap out with the same one. Two different cards register as two separate journeys and you are billed twice. A card digitised into a phone is read under a different card number, so tapping in with the phone and out with the plastic causes exactly the same problem. Miss the tap-out and you are charged the maximum fare for the line.

  • A failed charge blocks the card at the gates

    If a charge fails - not enough balance, say - the card goes automatically onto the Deny List and from that moment cannot open the gates any more. Settling the outstanding amount in the reserved area of the Unico Campania site clears it. The card itself is not blocked and works normally everywhere else.

  • One funicular is closed, with a replacement bus

    Of the four funiculars, Montesanto has been shut since 15 May 2026 for its twenty-year overhaul, with no reopening date announced. A replacement bus links piazza Vanvitelli, Corso Vittorio Emanuele, piazza Dante and piazza Matteotti instead, first departure from Vanvitelli at 06:30 and last at 21:32. Of the three still running, only Centrale and Chiaia are named officially as contactless stations; nothing official either confirms or denies Mergellina, so carry a ticket for that one.
