Porto

An old river port stacked on the slopes of the Douro. A modern metro and heritage trams share the hills.

Metro do Porto

No gates: your tap on the validator before the platform makes the ride legal - every boarding, every change, passes included; skip it and you count as fare-dodging. Fares count zone rings out from the first validation.

How to ride

  1. 1
    Buy a blue Andante card
Get a blue Andante (Azul) at a station machine or an Andante shop, then load it with a ticket for the zones you need.
  2. 2
Work out how many zones first
The ticket is counted in rings out from the station you start at. Pick your starting point on the map on the official site.
  3. 3
Tap before you reach the platform
No gates here. Hold the card within 10 cm of the black circle on the validator and wait for the green light before going through.
  4. 4
Take the card out of your wallet
Don't tap the whole wallet - with more than one Andante inside, or a bank card next to it, the wrong one gets read.
  5. 5
    Tap again at every transfer
Tap again at the station whenever you change line or vehicle. Inside your ticket's time limit nothing extra comes off.
  6. 6
Keep the ticket until you are out
There is no tap-out, but inspectors can ask to see the ticket out of your wallet, so keep it on you to the end of the trip.

Tap to ride
It works only if you board at Aeroporto, Senhora da Hora, Casa da Música or Trindade on line E, or at Campanhã, Bolhão, Campo 24 de Agosto, São Bento or Aliados in the city centre. What the operator limits is where you board; it says nothing at all about where you may get off.
VISAMastercard
Only when you board at one of nine stations, and only on the marked validators.
Phone wallet
Wallets work at the same nine stations; the card behind them decides.
Card payment at machines Unverified
The official pages never say what the machines and shops accept.
IC card
Load singles or 24-hour tickets on the blue card - validate every time.
App tickets
Anda
Anda is Android-only and needs NFC; a month you use it carries a 0.10 EUR fee.

Heads-up

  • Tapping works only at the nine stations and marked readers

Tapping a bank card straight onto the validator only works if you board at one of the nine listed stations, and only on the validators carrying the special mark. Tap anywhere else and nothing is bought - to an inspector you are simply travelling without a ticket.

  • Validate with the card out of your wallet, not through it

Take the card out of your wallet to validate. With more than one Andante inside, or a bank card sitting next to it, the wrong ticket can be deducted or nothing validates at all - watch for the green light before you walk on.

  • The daily cap is lost if you switch card and phone wallet

To get the daily cap on tap-to-ride, stick to one form of the card for the whole day - either the physical card or the one in your phone. Switch between them partway and they are counted as two different cards, so four rides or more will not bring the cap into play.

  • One bank card covers one passenger, not your companion

Tap-to-ride is one bank card per passenger. You cannot tap the same card twice to cover two people, so anyone travelling with you needs their own card or an Andante.
