How to ride

1. 1

   Install the operator's app and sign up

   The app is the only way to rent; you must be 18 or over and register a payment card.

   Find a vehicle on the map and scan its QR code

   Use the map in the app to find a vehicle nearby, then scan the QR code on it to unlock.

   Check where you may ride

   No riding on pavements, pedestrian streets, squares or gardens - nor on the Arrábida or Freixo bridge or the top deck of Luís I.

   In the old town the vehicle slows itself

   You may ride into the restricted zones such as Ribeira, but the vehicle is held electronically to 10 km/h.

   End the ride at a blue-marked share point

   Park and end the ride at a share point marked in blue on the road, choosing one that still has space.

   Places you must not leave it

   Not on pavements, crossings, bus stops, taxi ranks or disabled parking bays.

Heads-up

• End the ride only at a designated share point with space

  You may only end a ride at a share point designated by the city, and only where there is space. The code names the places you may not leave a vehicle: pavements, ramped accesses, pedestrian crossings, bus stops and bus terminals, stops reserved for tourist services, taxi ranks, time-limited parking bays, disabled parking bays and reserved bays. A vehicle left so that it obstructs traffic or pedestrians is repositioned or removed immediately at the operator's expense - but the cost can reach you through the rental contract. Lime's terms make the user liable for fines and charges arising from improper parking, with a retrieval fee of up to 110 euros if you cannot return the vehicle to a valid area and ask them to collect it, and a charge of up to 390 euros if it is left where the operator cannot reach it. Check the map in the app for a share point with space before you stop.

• Lime's terms require you to wear a helmet

  Lime's terms make helmet use a condition of renting: the agreement has the user accept that they will wear a CE-marked safety helmet whenever they use the service, whether or not the law requires it, fitted and fastened to the manufacturer's instructions. Porto is a city of cobbles and steep hills, and in the restricted zones of the old town the vehicle itself is held to 10 km/h. If you have no helmet with you, decide in advance which stretches you will ride and which you will walk or take public transport for.

• Operators' terms bar anyone under 18 from renting

  Under-18s cannot rent. Lime's user agreement requires the user to be at least 18 and expressly prohibits use by a minor, and Bird's terms also require riders to be over 18. The city code only obliges operators to make sure users know the minimum age and the safety equipment rules; it does not set an age itself, so the 18-year line is one each operator draws in its own terms. If your party includes teenagers, plan on the basis that they cannot rent.
