Porto

An old river port stacked on the slopes of the Douro. A modern metro and heritage trams share the hills.

Porto Airport access (Aeroporto Francisco Sá Carneiro, OPO)

Porto's airport link runs on ordinary Andante zone fares: a Z4 single to the centre is EUR 2.30. On line E through the airport you can even just tap a bank card - but the pilot covers only nine stations and bus 500.

How to ride

  1. 1
    Walk to the metro station
The airport is the terminus of line E (purple). There are no gates, so you walk straight to the platform.
  2. 2
Buy a ticket, or take out your card
Buy an Andante at a station machine or the airport tourist office (08:00-19:00). To tap, take the card out of your wallet.
  3. 3
    Validate before you board
Hold it within 10 cm of the black circle on the platform validator and wait for the green light and beep.
  4. 4
    Validate again at every change
Validate again whenever you change line or switch to a bus, for example at Trindade. Passes are no exception.
  5. 5
    After midnight, take bus 3M
The last metro leaves the airport at 00:42. After that, bus 3M links Aliados and the airport once an hour.
  6. 6
Taxis at the rank, ride-hailing in the app
Check the meter is running. With ride-hailing, take only the car you booked in the app and turn down anyone touting.

Heads-up

  • Never take a car that approached you; check the taxi meter

The transport regulator has flagged a rise in touting for taxis and ride-hailing at Portuguese airports. By law a ride-hailing trip can only be booked through the app and can only be paid electronically, so never get into a car that approached you. In a taxi, check the meter is running from the start; if the driver will not switch it on, get out and find another taxi.

  • Tapping a bank card works only at nine stations and bus 500

Tapping a bank card to travel is a pilot limited to nine metro stations - the airport among them - plus bus 500. The official page says it is valid only for passengers boarding at those stations, so a tap anywhere else buys nothing and leaves you travelling without a ticket. Check your boarding station is on the list before you head back out to the airport.
