Tram

Bus replacement for works is the norm on Rome's trams. Fares match the bus and metro: stamp a 100-minute BIT on board or tap a bank card - and re-tap or re-stamp before the 100 minutes expire, or the rest is unticketed.

    All six tram lines are running as buses

    From 3 August 2026 tram lines 3, 5, 14 and 19 are running as replacement buses over their entire routes, for substation upgrades and track renewal ahead of the new CAF Urbos trams; ATAC says they will return gradually between 7 September and 23 November. Lines 2 and 8 were already fully replaced by buses for separate works (viale delle Belle Arti and the circonvallazione Gianicolense), so in practice none of Rome's six tram lines is running. The buses generally serve the tram stops, but some have been moved, so check the notices on the ground.

How to ride

    Buy your ticket before you board
    Buy a BIT at a tobacconist, newsstand or ticket machine. If you are paying by contactless card, just board.
  2. 2
    Stamp or tap the moment you board
    Stamp paper tickets in the machine on board - unstamped means no ticket. Tap one card only (two fail) and check the green screen.
  3. 3
    Re-tap before the 100 minutes run out
    Changing vehicles? Tap or stamp again on the next one. Inside the validity window it costs nothing extra.
  4. 4
    Show the exact card or ticket if checked
    If you paid by card, show that same card. With a paper ticket, keep it on you until you get off.

Heads-up

  • The "Tap&Go" fine SMS is a phishing scam

    An SMS is going around claiming your Tap&Go validation is incomplete, that you risk a fine, and that you must confirm right now. ATAC states officially that it never sends customers SMS asking them to confirm or pay anything to do with Tap&Go. Do not open the link and do not enter card or personal details. All an inspector ever asks for is the card you actually paid with.
