Taxi (white)

Rome caps taxi fares by law - never more than the meter plus supplements. Airport rides into the Aurelian Walls are all-in fixed prices per car, direct trips only. Apps also send NCC hire cars, which no ceiling binds.

How to ride

    Look for a white car with a TAXI roof sign
    White car, TAXI roof sign, and the licence number, crest and town name on the front doors; at an airport check it says Roma.

    Use a rank, or call or book by app
    The queue order binds the drivers, not you - you may pick any car at the rank. The city's own dispatch line is 060609.

    Check the meter before you set off
    The meter must sit where you can read it too. On a fixed-price ride it must be switched off once you are aboard.

    Say how you will pay before you start
    Say cash or card before you set off. Every taxi must carry a card reader and cannot refuse one.

    Take the receipt when you get out
    Ask and one must be given. It carries the licence number, the driver's name, the fare, the date, the time and the distance.

Heads-up

  • Cars that approach you at arrivals may be unlicensed

    Do not go with anyone who approaches you at the arrivals exit. The airport operator warns that such cars may be driven by people without a licence and may charge more than the official fare. The official ranks are on the arrivals level of Terminals 1 and 3 at Fiumicino, and outside the arrivals exit at Ciampino.

  • The Fiumicino rank mixes two municipalities' taxis

    The ranks at Fiumicino hold taxis licensed by Rome and taxis licensed by the neighbouring Comune di Fiumicino. Both are white with a TAXI roof sign and both are legitimate, but each municipality sets its own fares, and the EUR 55.00 fixed price to the area inside the walls is Rome's figure. Tell them apart by the crest and the town name on the front doors.

  • NCC hire cars cannot be flagged down

    NCC hire cars cannot be flagged down - they must wait at their garage, street parking while awaiting a booking is banned, and they are booking-only, with the price agreed between you.
