Tap a credit card straight on the gate - ATAC's list runs to JCB and UnionPay. But Rome is a validation city: an unvalidated ticket is no ticket, and a 100-minute ticket is one metro ride; re-entry costs a fresh fare.

How to ride

    Buy a ticket, or just have your card ready
    Buy one at a station machine, ticket office or tobacconist - or skip that and go straight to the gate with a contactless card.
  2. 2
    Tap or insert at the gate
    Tap one card only - more and the reader fails. Paper tickets feed through the gate; green light and open barrier mean validated.
  3. 3
    Change lines without leaving the gates
    Changes between lines A, B, B1 and C stay inside the gates; only the A-C swap at San Giovanni means going back through them.
  4. 4
    Keep your ticket or card until you are out
    Inspectors do check, so keep the ticket - or the card you tapped with - on you until you leave the station.

Heads-up

  • Your own e-scooter or e-bike is banned on board

    You cannot bring your own e-scooter, hoverboard, Segway or pedal-assist e-bike onto ATAC's metro, buses or trams - the conditions of carriage ban powered micromobility outright as a safety hazard. A human-powered folding bike (under 110x80x40cm folded) rides free on lines A, B-B1 and C.

  • A text about Tap & Go payment is a scam

    A text message claiming your Tap & Go payment failed and you risk a fine is a scam. ATAC states on its own site that it never sends customers SMS asking them to confirm or pay for Tap & Go. Do not open the link and do not enter personal or bank details.
