Regional trains (FL lines), Metromare and Roma-Viterbo

The FL lines have no fare gates: stamp your ticket at the platform validator before boarding. Only Metromare and Roma-Viterbo have gates - a card taps you in. Inside the ring the train-only 1-euro ticket is cheapest.

How to ride

Work out which kind of line you're taking

Trenitalia FL lines have no fare gates; Metromare and Roma-Viterbo do. That changes the ticket you buy.

Buy your ticket before you board

Buy at a machine, office or newsstand. On Metromare and the urban Roma-Viterbo line you can just tap a card at the gate instead.

Validate, then board

Stamp your ticket in the platform validator on FL lines, or at the gate on Metromare and Roma-Viterbo. Unstamped means no ticket.

Keep the ticket until you leave the station

On the FL lines, inspectors check on board. Keep the ticket until you exit the station and show it with a photo ID.

90 minutes, 2nd class, any direction - but valid only on Trenitalia trains, not on metro or buses.

Covers trains, metro and buses including Metromare - one train and one metro ride, and only inside the ring.

Regional train beyond Rome, one way (2nd class, by distance)

Priced in distance bands - 1.10 up to 10 km, 8.40 for 126-150 km. Leaving Lazio uses a different tariff.

Heads-up

Trains will not return to the Centocelle line

Trains will not return to ATAC's Termini-Centocelle line. It stopped after two trains sideswiped each other on a single-track section on 4 March 2026, and in April the city's mobility councillor said the service would not resume. The route is to become the Termini-Tor Vergata tram; for now bus 105 covers the same corridor.
E-scooter rules flip depending on who runs the train

You cannot take your own e-scooter onto Metromare or the Roma-Viterbo line (both run by Cotral); the same goes for e-bikes. Trenitalia's regional trains, by contrast, carry them free if they are folded and switched off (up to 80x120x45 cm). The rule flips depending on who runs the train.
You cannot buy on board at Rome's main stations

You cannot buy a ticket on board when you start from one of Rome's main stations. Termini, Tiburtina, Ostiense, Trastevere and S. Pietro are listed as no-onboard-sales stations, and boarding without a ticket is treated as fare evasion even if you tell the conductor.
