Shared e-bikes and e-scooters (monopattini)

Rome has no public bike-share - just dockless vehicles from three licensed private operators. The trap is the helmet: an e-scooter needs one at any age, none is provided, so you must bring your own in order to rent.

How to ride

    Register in the app
    Install the Dott, Lime or Bird app and register with an ID document - all three require you to be 18 or over.

    Bring your own helmet for a scooter
    E-scooters require a helmet at any age and none is provided - if you have not got one, take an e-bike instead.

    Check the ride and parking zones
    Check the app map for no-ride areas and parking spots; you cannot end a rental inside a restricted zone.

    Scan the QR code to unlock
    Scan the QR code on the vehicle in the app to unlock it. Check the brakes and the battery level before you set off.

    Park in a marked spot and end the trip
    Park in a marked spot and tap to end the trip in the app - the meter keeps running until you do.

Heads-up

  • A helmet is compulsory on e-scooters at every age

    An e-scooter helmet is compulsory even for over-18s. Italy's highway code, in force since December 2024, made it a requirement at every age - and since a shared scooter has nowhere to stow one, you can only rent if you bring your own. Fines run from EUR 50 to EUR 250.

  • A rented e-bike or scooter cannot board transit

    A shared e-bike or e-scooter cannot come with you on the bus, tram or metro. ATAC's conditions of carriage name powered micromobility as a prohibited dangerous item, so end the rental before you transfer to public transport.

  • E-scooters belong on city streets and cycle lanes

    E-scooters may use only city streets limited to 50 km/h, cycle lanes and pedestrian areas. Riding against the traffic is banned, and so is parking on the pavement outside marked bays. The speed limit is 20 km/h, and 6 km/h in pedestrian areas.
