Florence

A compact treasury of the Renaissance. The old town is best on foot; a tram runs straight to the airport.

Taxi (white)

Fares are set by the city and haggling is banned - you pay the meter or a posted fixed price. Airport to the centre runs at a flat rate. Booking ahead barely exists: even radio dispatch takes orders only an hour out.

How to ride

  1. 1
Check for a white car with the door badge
A white car with a TAXI roof sign, and a yellow badge on each front door with the red lily crest and the licence number.
  2. 2
Use a rank, or ring or book by app
An empty cab can be flagged down in the street; the radio lines are 055 4390, 055 4242 and 055 3131.
  3. 3
Calling adds a dispatch fee and the approach time
A dispatch supplement is added, and the time it takes to reach you and to wait also runs on the meter.
  4. 4
Read the posted fares before you set off
The fare extract and the list of fixed-price routes must be posted inside the car, readable from the back seat.
  5. 5
Meet the condition for the airport fixed price
It needs a hotel or private address in the central area, and the person who asked waiting at the pick-up point.
  6. 6
Take the receipt before you get out
The receipt carries the licence number, the date, the metered total and a mark against every supplement applied.

Estimates use exchange rates as of September 5, 2026

You can use a rank, flag one down, ring for one or book by app - but under the city rules an individual driver may not accept a booking and the co-operative may only take one up to an hour before the ride. Anything earlier is a chiamata differita that is merely logged, and the search for a car only starts about ten minutes before, so the arrival time is not guaranteed. The radio dispatch lines are 055 4390 (Co.Ta.Fi), 055 4242 (So.Co.Ta) and 055 3131 (itTaxi Firenze, from 1 January 2025).

Heads-up

  • Do not take a car that quotes a price up front

Do not get into a car whose driver offers you a price before you set off. The Florence rules forbid the fare being agreed directly between passenger and driver, and forbid any charge for the return leg. In a licensed taxi you pay one of two things only - the metered amount plus its supplements, or a fixed price posted inside the car.

  • You cannot book a taxi for a set time

You cannot hold a taxi for a given time. The city rules bar a driver from taking a booking, and the radio co-operative may only accept one up to an hour before the ride; anything earlier is merely logged as a chiamata differita, with the search for a car beginning about ten minutes beforehand. For a journey that cannot slip, such as an early flight, plan another way to the airport rather than relying on a taxi turning up.

  • Taxis are hardest to find at night, when no extras run

Taxis are hardest to find at night. In a 1,200-person survey run by the city in December 2025, night was both the busiest time for taxi use and the time when people had most trouble finding one. Up to 60 extra seasonal licences run from 25 April to 1 November, but their shift is set at 11:00 to 23:00, so the late-night hours are not what the extra cars cover.
