Florence
A compact treasury of the Renaissance. The old town is best on foot; a tram runs straight to the airport.
No smartcard, no gates - it all runs on one 90-minute ticket, covering buses, trams and regional trains between the city's nine stations. Stamping is a must - unstamped means no ticket. A bank card tapped on board buys a single, but a bus-bought tap ticket is void on trains - and with train TAP&TAP a missed tap-off charges the regional maximum fare. No visitor day pass or fare cap exists, and the Firenzecard covers no transport. The airport is just the T2 tram on the same ticket; the catch is luggage: big suitcases need an extra ticket each.
