Florence

A compact treasury of the Renaissance. The old town is best on foot; a tram runs straight to the airport.

Tramvia (lines T1 and T2)

No gates: stamp a pre-bought ticket on board, or tap a bank card on the reader by the doors to buy a single on the spot. Both cost EUR 2.00, with 90 minutes of transfers onto the buses. Big luggage needs an extra ticket.

    Old-price tickets expire on 31 January 2027

Tickets and carnets bought at the old price up to 31 July 2026 stay valid, on paper or in the app, until 31 January 2027. From 1 February 2027, merely holding an old-price ticket becomes a punishable offence. If you have leftovers from an earlier trip, use them up before then.

How to ride

  1. 1
Buy a ticket at the stop
Every tram stop has a machine, but it only sells single tickets - carnets come from a shop or a ticket office.
  2. 2
    No ticket? Tap your card
Hold a bank card, phone or watch to the reader by the doors and it issues a single ticket on the spot.
  3. 3
    Stamp it as you board
A paper ticket goes into the machine on board the first time you use it; a ticket in the app is activated in the app.
  4. 4
Change to a bus on the same ticket within 90 minutes
The same ticket carries you onto the city buses. If you are riding on a card, tap again each time you board.
  5. 5
Press the button to get off
The doors have request buttons - once the tram has stopped, press the button beside the door to get out.

Heads-up

  • Big luggage needs an extra ticket

Only one item up to 10 kg and 50x30x25 cm travels free. Anything larger needs a supplementary ticket per item, up to two per person, and nothing over 80x45x25 cm or 20 kg may be carried at all - which catches most people boarding T2 at the airport. There is no luggage rack on board, so keep your bags out of other passengers' way.

  • Keep the carnet's matrice stub with your ticket

If you ride on a carnet of 10, keep the stub called the matrice - it sits on the back of ticket number 1. Inspectors are entitled to see both the ticket and the matrice, so do not throw it away until the carnet is used up.

  • Bikes and scooters ride only in set time bands

You may bring your own bicycle or e-scooter onto the tram, but only into cars marked with the relevant symbol, secured in the marked space in the rear car. On weekdays and Saturdays this is allowed only from 05:00-07:00, 10:00-17:00 and 20:00-00:30; on Sundays and holidays it is allowed all day. Bicycles may be up to 180 cm long, and scooters must be folded with nothing sticking out, up to 195 cm in total. Staff may refuse when the tram is crowded.
