Malmö

A port town at the Swedish end of the bridge from Copenhagen. Only its green city buses take a tap of a bank card.

Pågatåg and Öresundståg

There are no gates and nothing is sold on board - buy in the app or at a station machine, then show the ticket when asked. A cross-strait ticket also covers Copenhagen's metro and buses inside the zones you bought.

How to ride

  1. 1
    Buy before you board
Buy in the app or at a station machine; your destination sets the zone and the price. Ordinary tickets are not sold on board.
  2. 2
    Activate the ticket before departure
Buy now and the app activates it; a ticket bought for later must be activated before departure. A reskort activates at a machine.
  3. 3
Check the board and get on
No gates here, so walk straight to the platform. With a bike or bulky luggage, use the door marked with the matching symbol.
  4. 4
    Show your ticket when asked
On trains you show the ticket when asked, so keep it on you until you are off. Crossing the strait, keep your ID out too.
  5. 5
Ride on to the city bus on the same ticket
An Öresundståg ticket covers one connecting city bus ride at each end, from an hour before departure to an hour after arrival.

Heads-up

  • Crossing the strait means carrying ID

Trains from Denmark stop first at Hyllie, where passengers getting off are checked on the platform and those staying on are checked in their seats. The same applies outbound - since November 2019 a valid ID document has been required to travel to Denmark. Nordic citizens can use a Nordic driving licence, passport or national ID card; other European citizens a passport or national ID card; everyone else a passport plus a visa or residence permit where needed. Denmark dropped the permanent passport check at CPH Airport station on 12 May 2023, but spot checks continue.

  • A reskort needs a printed receipt outside Skåne

If your ticket sits on a Skånetrafiken reskort and you are crossing to Denmark, print an inspektionskvitto at a ticket machine, customer centre or agent before you leave Skåne. Without it the card does not count as a valid ticket, and on the Swedish side that means the 1,500 kr surcharge - inspections on Danish territory fall under Danish rules and a different penalty. The receipt alone is not a ticket either, so show it together with the card. For Swedish county borders the picture changed on 9 September 2025 - new cross-county tickets can no longer be loaded onto a reskort, so the receipt rule now only bites if you are travelling to Kronoberg, Blekinge, Kalmar, Halland or Gothenburg on a ticket bought before that date.

  • Bikes need an add-on ticket over the bridge

A bicycle rides free on the train inside Skåne, but crossing the bridge needs a cykeltillägg, bought together with your ticket and valid on Öresundståg between Malmö and Österport. Space is limited and cannot be reserved - at most six bikes, prams or similar items per train set on both Pågatåg and Öresundståg, with prams and wheelchairs given priority, so a full carriage means waiting for the next train. City buses take no bicycles at all. A folded bike or folded scooter counts as hand luggage and travels free, while an unfolded e-scooter or Segway is treated exactly like a bicycle - which means it too needs a cykeltillägg over the bridge.
