Vienna

Palaces and the opera house line the Ring, and Vienna's famous trams trace the loop around them.

Taxi and ride-hailing

Taxi fares are fixed by law - hail one or take a rank cab and the meter's figure is what you pay. Only booked rides can agree a price up front, still within 20% of the metered tariff - Uber and Bolt run inside that band.

How to ride

  1. 1
Take one from a rank, or flag one down
In town, take a cab from a Taxistandplatz rank or flag down a passing one. Those two ways are what the fixed tariff covers.
  2. 2
Check the meter is on and readable
The meter must stay on for the whole trip and be readable from your seat. What it shows at the end is what you pay.
  3. 3
Booking by app or phone? Agree the price first
A booked ride may run on a price agreed up front. If it does, the operator must confirm it before you set off.
  4. 4
    Debit card always works
Paying by debit card in the car is a legal passenger right, and cash works too. You get a receipt automatically when you pay.
  5. 5
Crossing the state line? Agree a total first
Rides beyond the state line fall outside the fixed tariff and are freely priced. The driver must say so; agree the total first.

Typical costs

Fixed-price routes1

Price band when a booked fare is agreed
Same 4 km, 12 min trip: 20% either side of the 16.56 EUR comparison fare; outside it is an offence
13.25〜19.87 EUR ≈ $15–23

How the meter adds up5

Base fare (Mon-Sat 06:00-23:00)
On top of this, 0.95 EUR/km up to 5 km (0.58 beyond) and 0.58 EUR per minute run in parallel
3.8 EUR ≈ $4
Base fare (23:00-06:00 Mon-Sat, all day Sun/holidays)
Distance and time rates are 15% higher. What counts is when the ride starts; the meter switches over itself
4.3 EUR ≈ $5
Surcharge for phone or app booking
Only two surcharges may ever be charged - this and the large-vehicle one. Nothing may be added for luggage
2 EUR ≈ $2
Surcharge for 5+ passengers in a large vehicle
If both apply it is 4 EUR in total. Otherwise the fare is per vehicle, not per head, and includes VAT
2 EUR ≈ $2
City's own worked example (Mon-Sat daytime, 4 km, 12 min)
From a rank: 3.80 base + 3.80 distance + 6.96 time. The time part grows the longer you sit in traffic
14.56 EUR ≈ $17

Heads-up

  • Rides out of the state are freely priced

Rides that leave the state of Vienna - the airport among them - fall outside the fixed tariff and may be priced freely. The driver is legally required to tell you so before departure, so agree the total there and then instead of setting off without one.

  • Do not ride with the meter off

If you took the cab from a rank or flagged it down and the meter is not running, or you cannot see it, do not ride. On these trips the law forbids charging anything other than the metered amount, and a cab with a broken meter is not allowed to take the job at all.
