Not one ticket gate - yet no ticket means EUR 135 on the spot. Paper tickets count only once stamped in a blue validator before boarding. Card tap-in is still a nine-station trial - buy in the app or at a machine first.

How to ride

    Buy your ticket first
    Buy at a station machine, in the WienMobil app, or at a tobacconist (Trafik). Carry photo ID on days you ride on an app ticket.

    Stamp paper tickets in a validator
    A paper ticket with a validation strip goes into a blue validator before you reach the platform. It is not valid until stamped.
  3. 3
    There are no gates - walk straight through
    No barriers here. Crossing the line of validators is what forms the contract of carriage. Keep the ticket on you until you leave.
  4. 4
    Expect plain-clothes inspectors
    Inspectors ride in plain clothes. Hand your ticket over when asked; an app ticket must be shown large enough to read.
  5. 5
    The airport needs its own ticket
    City tickets stop at the Schwechat city boundary. Trips to and from the airport need a separate ticket.

Heads-up

  • A ticket bought after boarding does not waive the penalty

    Buying a ticket once you have spotted an inspector will not save you. The fare regulations state expressly that a ticket bought after the journey has begun cannot be used to waive the penalty fare.
