Vienna

Palaces and the opera house line the Ring, and Vienna's famous trams trace the loop around them.

City bus / Nightline night bus

Unlike the same operator's trams, the buses sell no tickets on board. Buy first - a U-Bahn station machine, a Trafik tobacconist or the app - then stamp a paper ticket in the on-board validator the moment you board.

How to ride

  1. 1
Buy the ticket before you walk to the stop
Buses carry no ticket machine and no conductor. Buy first at a U-Bahn station machine, at a tobacconist, or in the WienMobil app.
  2. 2
Stamp a paper ticket as you board
Push a strip-type paper ticket into the on-board validator right after you get on. Unstamped counts the same as no ticket.
  3. 3
Keep the ticket on you until you are off
Plain-clothes inspectors board without warning. Hand the ticket over for checking when asked.
  4. 4
After midnight, look for the N routes
From 00:30 to 05:00 the N routes run every 30 minutes. Their stops are marked with a blue sign and a yellow "N".
  5. 5
Buy a separate ticket for the airport buses
Airport buses and Flixbus are outside the city ticket. The zone edge is Schwechat, and beyond it you need a separate ticket.

Heads-up

  • Rufbus routes only run if you phone ahead

Some routes and route sections run as "Rufbus" services, by day as well as by night, and only when ordered - so the bus will not turn up unless you call. Phone 01 7909 424 plus the two digits of the line at least 15 minutes before the scheduled time and give your name, party size, luggage, stop and destination. The driver asks for your name before letting you on.
