Inside the Free Tram Zone the rule is not to tap - one accidental touch charges you a two-hour fare. Only when your ride leaves the zone do you tap on, with myki or contactless Visa or Mastercard.

    Half-price fares across Victoria until 1 January 2027

    Public transport across Victoria is half price for everyone, every day, from 1 June 2026 until 1 January 2027. Trams are included and the fares in this table are already the discounted ones. Just tap on as usual - there is nothing to apply for. Prices double back on 1 January 2027.

How to ride

    Check whether your trip stays inside the free zone
    If your trip starts and ends inside the Free Tram Zone covering the CBD and Docklands, just get on - don't tap at all.
  2. 2
    Sort out payment before you board if you're leaving the zone
    You can't buy or top up a myki on board - get one first from a machine at stations and some stops, or from a 7-Eleven.
  3. 3
    Tap on at the reader beside the door as you board
    Readers sit beside every door. Have your card in your hand while you wait, and tap as you step on.
  4. 4
    Signal your stop with the button or the cord
    As your stop approaches, press the stop button or pull the cord to let the driver know.
  5. 5
    Tap off if you leave Zone 1 or paid by card
    Trams starting and ending in Zone 1 need no tap off. Do tap off after getting out if you go beyond Zone 1 or paid by card.

    Check the traffic as you step off
    Many stops sit out in the roadway. Look both ways for traffic as you step off and again when you cross the tracks.

Heads-up

  • Don't tap at all inside the Free Tram Zone

    Don't tap at all if you're only riding inside the Free Tram Zone. An accidental tap on charges you a two-hour Zone 1+2 fare, and you only qualify for a refund if you tapped off inside the zone.

  • A mistaken tap on a tram cannot be undone

    On a tram you can't change your mind. Once you've tapped on you're charged for the trip even if you tap off within 15 minutes - unlike a train, where tapping off at the same station within 15 minutes costs nothing.

  • Many tram stops sit in the middle of traffic

    Melbourne's trams share most of their road space with cars, and many stops are islands in the middle of traffic. Look both ways for traffic every time you get on or off, and cross the tracks at marked pedestrian crossings.
