Heads-up
-
Do not rely on a prepaid card at the gates
Do not count on a prepaid card (Visa gift cards, Wise, Monzo and the like) at the gates. The official FAQ says only prepaid cards issued in Australia work, while the gazetted Conditions (§11.18) also allow Visa prepaid cards issued anywhere in the Asia Pacific - the two disagree. Ordinary credit and debit cards are fine even when issued overseas, so use one of those, or a myki.

Authorised Officers can check after you leave the station
Authorised Officers work in plain clothes as well as uniform, and can check your ticket even after you have left the train and the station. Keep the card or device you tapped with to hand until you are well clear.
