Velo Region Bern (PubliBike Velospot)

Bern's bike share is Velo Region Bern, run by PubliBike: register a payment method in its app to unlock a bike, or tap a SwissPass instead. Return it only to an active station - anywhere else adds a surcharge.

How to ride

    Register in the app
    Register your phone, name, email and a payment method in the app. From 18; 16 and 17 need a guardian's consent.

    Find an active station on the map
    The app map shows which stations are active and which bikes are free; around 70 per cent of the fleet is electric.
  3. 3
    Press the button on the lock to unlock
    Tap Rent in the app, then press the on/off button on the bike lock - the bike number appears and it unlocks.
  4. 4
    Return it to a station and lock it
    Ride to an active station, press the lock button and pull the lever down; two beeps mean shut, the end confirms 30 seconds later.

Heads-up

  • Leaving it outside a station costs extra

    A hire can only be ended at an active station shown on the app map; ending it anywhere else brings a CHF 20 surcharge. The network only expanded to 17 municipalities in 2026 and stations are still being switched on one by one, so a rack you spot in the street may not be live yet. Pick your return point on the map before you unlock.

  • Three confusingly similar apps

    Only PubliBike Velospot (Zone 1) opens the new bikes in Bern. The operator runs three apps in Switzerland and two of them are called PubliBike Velospot - Zone 1, the one Bern uses, and the older Zone 3. The separate PubliBike (Zone 2) app has its own login. Check the zone number in the store, not just the name, before you install.

  • E-scooters are barred from much of the old town

    Shared e-scooters come from Voi alone, which the city licensed as the sole operator, and there are still zones where they may neither be ridden nor parked - large parts of the old town among them. You cannot end a rental inside one.
