Tap a bank card at the gate and ride - though the only networks the metro names are the Visa and Mastercard families. It is strictly one card per passenger - sharing one between two people is a finable offence.

How to ride
- 1Decide how you'll pay firstEither tap a bank card straight on the gate, or buy a navegante ocasional card from a machine.
- 2The machine sells the card first, then the ticketThe machine sells the €0.50 card first, then loads a ticket onto it. Cash, bank cards and MB WAY all work.
- 3One card per person, alwaysOne card covers one passenger per ride. Sharing one card between two people counts as travelling without a ticket.
- 4Tap in at the gateHold your card to the reader, wait for the green light, then walk through. Take a bank card out of your wallet before tapping.
- 5Tap out with the same thing you tapped in withYou must tap at the exit gate too - with the card if you entered with the card, with the phone if you entered with the phone.

Pickpockets work in teams on crowded transport
Watch your belongings on crowded trains, platforms and stops. The UK Foreign Office advises care on public transport and at busy bus and tram stops in Portugal, and notes that thieves work in teams using distraction techniques.

You can carry an e-scooter but not ride it in the station
You may carry an e-scooter, skateboard or hoverboard onto the train - but riding or parking one anywhere inside metro premises is strictly forbidden. Bicycles are allowed too, up to two per carriage and not when trains are crowded; folding bikes are exempt from that limit.
