Bike sharing and e-scooters (RideMovi / BiT Mobility)

You can't cycle in central Venice - even pushing a bike by hand is banned. Shared bikes and e-scooters are tools for mainland Mestre and Marghera and for the Lido, with registration and payment done entirely in the apps.

    E-scooters can be switched off by the new insurance rule

    The compulsory third-party insurance for e-scooters took effect on 16 July 2026, and BiT Mobility switched off its shared fleet nationwide for several days because the policies were not activated in time - the roughly 500 vehicles in Mestre and on the Lido included. Service has resumed, but the case is still live, so if the app map shows no vehicles at all, the fleet may be off again.

How to ride

    Install the app and register
    Bikes run on the RideMovi app, e-scooters on BiT Mobility - both need an account with a payment method.

    Check where you are allowed to ride
    You cannot ride into the historic centre; the service covers mainland Mestre and Marghera plus the Lido.

    Pick a vehicle on the map
    Choose a bike or scooter on the app map; unlocking a bike needs Bluetooth switched on.
  4. 4
    Scan the QR code to unlock
    Scan the QR code on the handlebar or the rear and the lock opens; pausing mid-ride is also done in the app.
  5. 5
    Park in a marked bay
    Park in a bay with the orange pictogram, or at a rack; upload a photo of the parked vehicle if the app asks.

    Make sure the ride has ended
    A bike beeps once then three times; a scooter ends from the app button, which refuses in a banned spot.

Heads-up

  • Helmets are compulsory on e-scooters

    A 2024 amendment to the Italian highway code extended the e-scooter helmet requirement from under-18s to every rider. The city's own page still carries the pre-amendment wording ("compulsory from 14 to 18"), so do not go by it.

  • Shared bikes cannot go on the boats

    The shared bikes may not be taken onto a vaporetto or a ferry-boat. To reach the Lido, end the ride near the landing stage, board on foot and unlock another bike on the far side. The rule allowing a privately owned bike on certain boat lines for a fee is a separate matter.

  • Shared e-scooters cannot go on the boats either

    BiT Mobility scooters are barred from vaporetti and ferry-boats as well. As with the bikes, end the ride before the landing stage and board on foot.

  • Never ride an e-scooter two-up

    The operator flatly forbids two people on one scooter. The minimum age is 14, and the speed is capped remotely at 20 km/h on roads and cycle lanes and 6 km/h in pedestrian areas.

  • Operator and rental model change during 2026

    In January 2026 the city approved the contract scheme for a new four-year concession, moving the service mostly to station-based rental and raising parking bays from 163 to at least 368. The operator, the app and the prices may all change, so check the map and the price in the app before you unlock.

  • The new concession raises the scooter age to 16

    The tender specification sets the minimum age at 14 for bikes and 16 for e-scooters, and the contracting authority confirmed in its published answers that scooter hire requires the rider to have turned 16. The 14 in force today belongs to the current operator and changes when the new one takes over.
