Thinner summer timetable
The summer timetable on the surface network runs from 27 June to 6 September, with fewer trams than in winter. Trams 4, 9, 14, 16, 24 and 27 are on a shifted calendar of their own - they went to the summer timetable on 4 July and return to the winter one on 31 August.
How to ride
- 1Get your ticket before you boardThere are no ticket machines at tram stops - buy first at a metro station machine, a tobacconist, or in the ATM app.
- 2Tap the reader as soon as you boardBank card or RicaricaMi, hold it to the reader by the doors. Inside Milan you do not tap again when you get off.
- 3Activate an app ticket before boardingBuying it is not enough - open the Wallet, pick the ticket, and validate it before you step on board.
- 4Press the red button for your stopYou have to request the stop yourself - press the red button before the stop where you want to get off.
- 5Keep your ticket until you are offThere are no gates, so inspectors board instead - keep the ticket or card you used until you have left the tram.

Heads-up
-
Do not tap your whole wallet
Present only the card you intend to use. Holding up a wallet or bag with several cards inside can charge a card you did not mean to use, or fail to read anything at all - the reader on board is a single universal device that handles season-ticket cards, bank cards, phones and watches alike.
-
Trips that stay inside zone Mi3 need a tap on the way out
Tapping out only matters when the trip leaves the city of Milan. On the tram network that means lines 15 (Rozzano) and 31 (Cinisello Balsamo): board and alight within one of those towns and the trip counts as staying inside zone Mi3. Miss the tap on the way out and 0.50 EUR is added to the fare.

The restaurant tram is a separate product
The ATMosfera restaurant tram cannot be boarded with a city transport ticket or pass - you pay online when you book and the voucher emailed to you is the only document that gets you on. The identical-looking 1928 cars you see around town are ordinary service trams that take an ordinary ticket.
