Milan taxis do not stop for a raised hand - you get one at an official rank, via the free number 02.7777 or the city's app. Malpensa has a fixed fare into town; Linate alone does not, so that ride runs on the meter.

    For Uber, book in the app
    Uber in Milan dispatches licensed NCC private-hire drivers or partner taxis. NCC cars cannot be hailed; you book first.

    Check whether a fixed fare applies
    Fixed fares cover set airport and Rho Fiera routes. Before getting in, ask the driver whether the fixed fare or the meter applies.

    Ask about card payment before boarding
    Nearly all taxis take cards, but the city's own tourism portal advises confirming before you board. Cash also works.

    Pay the amount shown on the meter
    Pay only what the meter shows; motorway tolls are the sole extra. On a fixed-fare route the published amount is the whole price.

    If something goes wrong, get a receipt
    Ask for a receipt with the taxi number, date, time, route and amount paid, then take it to the city's public-vehicle office.

Heads-up

  • When the fixed fare stops applying

    Fixed fares apply only if the trip runs without stops and without a change of route. If you ask the driver to go a different way, the fixed price lapses and the meter takes over. On a booking, waiting more than five minutes also lets the driver add the metered cost of coming to collect you.

  • The meter is the whole price

    Passengers owe only the amount shown on the meter, and the sole permitted extra is motorway tolls. Those tolls are charged one way when the destination is inside the airport basin (the Milan, Bergamo and Varese comuni covered by the regional rules) and both ways when it lies outside, so being charged for the return leg on a trip out of the basin is not overcharging.

  • Get a receipt, then take it to the city office

    If you dispute a fare, ask the driver for a receipt showing the taxi number, date and time, route and amount paid, and take it to the city's Ufficio Sharing e Autopubbliche at Via Sile 8. The driver must issue a receipt when the passenger asks for one.

  • If a driver refuses your card

    Accepting card payment is a legal duty in Italy, and refusing it carries a fine of 30 euro plus 4% of the transaction. Milan's official tourism portal says nearly all taxis take cards, but still advises confirming before you board.

  • You may pick which cab at a rank

    The regional rules let you pick any waiting cab at a street rank - not just the first in line - for reasons such as luggage, party size, payment methods, pets or wheelchair access. Airport and railway ranks fall under a separate article (art.33 c.5) where the order of arrival applies, but even there you may take a different cab from the loading bay if, for instance, the driver has no card terminal. That is why asking about cards before you get in is worth doing.
