Milan

Italy's capital of fashion and design. Beneath the Duomo runs the country's largest metro network.

Milan has no stored-value transit card; a contactless bank card or phone stands in, riding metro, trams and buses with no sign-up or fee. The manners split: the metro wants a tap in and out, trams and buses in the city one tap as you board, and a missed metro tap-out bills the maximum fare. Card taps work only on ATM's own vehicles, never Trenord's S lines, while the Mi1-Mi3 90-minute ticket covers metro, surface lines and S trains alike. Linate sits inside the city fare zone on metro M4; Malpensa is a separate operator's train.
