Trenord (S lines and regional trains)

The EUR 2.20 Mi1-Mi3 ticket covers not just the metro but the S lines through the Passante. A bank-card tap does not - it works on ATM's network only, so after tapping into the metro you exit and buy a rail ticket first.

S lines on the Rho side are cut back until 13 September

Works for the new Milano MIND station mean S11 Rho-Milano-Como does not run between Rho and Milano Porta Garibaldi Superficie until 13 September, and from 14 June to 13 September S6 turns back at Rho instead of running through from Novara. Between Rho and Milan, use S5.

Pay&Go charges a flat fee if you miss the second tap

With Pay&Go you must tap again at your destination. Miss it and a flat fee is charged - 10 EUR until the end of 2026, 15 EUR from 2027. The same fee applies if either your departure or arrival station is not equipped, so check both before you tap in.

How to ride

Buy the ticket before you board

Buy at a station machine, ticket office, newsagent or in the Trenord app - integrated tickets are never sold on board.

Validate it before you get on

Paper and chip tickets go to a platform validator or the gate reader; app tickets are started in the app and shown as a QR.

After a card tap, buy a fresh rail ticket

If you tapped in with a bank card, tap out at the interchange station and buy a rail ticket; check the works notice above.

Check both stations before using Pay&Go

Check that both your departure and arrival stations are equipped, and remember the trip only closes on the second tap.

Keep the ticket until you are out

Show it to the inspector on board, and keep it for the exit gates where the station has them.

An unvalidated STIBM ticket counts as no ticket

Holding a ticket is not enough. An unvalidated STIBM ticket such as a Mi1-Mi3 counts as no ticket, both during an on-board inspection and at the exit gates. At stations without gates, look for the validator on the platform before you board, and if the validator is missing or broken, go to the conductor yourself once on board.
