The exact opposite of a BVG bus: the on-board machine takes coins and nothing else. New M4 trams carry no machine at all, so sort your ticket before boarding. No gates - stamp paper tickets yourself as you get on.

How to ride

    Buy your ticket before boarding
    Buy before boarding - at a shop near the stop, at a machine in any U-Bahn station, or in the BVG app.

    Buying on board means having coins
    Where a tram has a machine it takes coins only - no notes, no cards, no phone payments - and the driver need not give change.
  3. 3
    Board by any door
    There are no gates, so board by any door. Keep the ticket until you get off and show it to inspectors on request.

    Stamp a paper ticket as you board
    If the ticket says it needs validating, push it into the stamping machine on board and check the stamp came out.
  5. 5
    Press the stop button before your stop
    Press the button before the stop where you want off. The one with the wheelchair symbol holds the door open longer.

Heads-up

  • No ticket machine on the new M4 trams

    The new Urbanliner trams now running on line M4 carry no ticket machine at all. Board without a ticket and you count as fare-dodging, so buy first - at a sales point, a U-Bahn station machine, or in the BVG app. Cars without a machine have a notice on every door.
