Shared bikes & e-scooters

Nearly everything is rented by app, and e-scooters dominate. Free-floating, but in no-parking zones you may only park in a marked bay. Pavements are banned, and the 0.5 per-mille drink-drive limit covers e-scooters too.

How to ride

    Install an app and register
    Install an operator's app or BVG's Jelbi, then register your name, phone number and a payment card.

    Pick a vehicle on the map and unlock it
    Pick a nearby vehicle on the map and scan its QR code to unlock. Check the brakes and tyres before you set off.
  3. 3
    Ride on the cycle track
    Use the cycle track or cycle lane; where there is none, ride on the roadway. Pavements and pedestrian zones are banned.

    Check where you are allowed to park
    In a no-parking zone you may only leave the vehicle in a designated bay - check the map in the app before you finish.
  5. 5
    Park along the kerb and leave the path clear
    Park parallel to the kerb, keep at least 2.3 m of pavement clear, and stay 15 m away from tram and bus stops.
  6. 6
    Take a Call a Bike back to a station
    A Call a Bike has to go back to a station and be locked there; ending the rental anywhere else costs extra.

Heads-up

  • E-scooters fall under drink-driving law

    E-scooters count as motor vehicles in German law, and the same 0.5 per mille alcohol limit that applies to drivers applies to them under section 24a of the road traffic act - but it is zero for anyone under 21 and for drivers still in their probationary period. At 0.5 the federal ministry says you can face a 500 EUR fine and a one-month driving ban. Do not treat one as your ride home after a night out.

  • Rented e-scooters are banned from BVG vehicles and stations

    You cannot take a rented e-scooter onto BVG vehicles or into their stations - since 1 May 2024 they are banned across the buses, trams, U-Bahn and every station (e-bikes and electric wheelchairs are exempt).

  • Bad parking bills you the tow plus a handling fee

    If your vehicle has to be moved or towed because of how you parked it, the operator bills a handling fee on top of the actual cost - emmy charges 50 EUR to move it, 50 EUR for a tow and 15 EUR to process a parking ticket.
