Berlin

A capital that wears its divided history openly. The S-Bahn and U-Bahn stitch together what the Wall once split.

No gates and nothing to tap — a bank card only buys tickets; no rechargeable transit card exists. One VBB ticket covers U-Bahn, S-Bahn, regional trains, trams, buses and ferries alike. Stamp paper tickets yourself before boarding: unpunched, even a paid ticket counts as fare-dodging; app tickets need no stamp. On-board payment splits into opposites — buses are fully cashless (a tap on the driver's reader buys the ticket), while tram machines take coins only. AB tickets cover the city, but BER airport sits in zone C and takes an ABC ticket.
