Helsinki
A Baltic capital of design and sea air. Green trams loop the city, and no station has a ticket gate.
Commuter train (lähijuna)
Fares match buses, trams and the metro: pick zones A to E - single-zone tickets don't exist; you always buy at least two. Onboard contactless costs a bit more than the app. Trains go by one letter, not destination.

How to ride
- 1Pick your zones and buy a ticketWork out which zones your trip crosses. The HSL app is cheapest; in a hurry, buy at the reader inside the train instead.
- 2Check the line letter on the departure boardGo by the single-letter line code - A, I, K, P, U - and the platform number on the boards, not the destination name.
- 3Tap the reader as soon as you boardWith a bank card or HSL card, buy at the onboard reader right after boarding; an app ticket must be open before you get on.
- 4Keep your ticket to the endStations have no gates, so walk straight onto the platform - show your ticket only when a conductor or an inspector asks for it.
- 5Transfer on the same ticketWithin its validity you can switch to buses, trams or the Metro at no extra cost - show the same card you bought with.

Contactless stops working if the onboard connection drops
The onboard card readers lose contactless payment when their data connection drops. Riding on without managing to buy a ticket still counts as fare evasion, so an app ticket or a paper ticket is the safe fallback.
