Helsinki

A Baltic capital of design and sea air. Green trams loop the city, and no station has a ticket gate.

Taxi and ride-hailing (taksi)

Every company prices freely - cars in one rank can differ. Check the example fare (10 km, 15 min) on the right-side price card: over 47 euros, no more can be charged without prior agreement. Uber and Bolt are taxis here.

How to ride

  1. 1
At a rank, compare the price cards
The price card is on the car's right-hand side, with the example fare at the top. Compare them and pick any taxi you like.
  2. 2
    Check the yellow-and-black roof light
A licensed taxi has a yellow-and-black roof light reading TAKSI or TAXI, and displays the operator's and driver's names.
  3. 3
Ask the price before you set off
You must be told the total price, or how it will be worked out, before the ride starts - and that basis cannot change en route.
  4. 4
Check the price when you book ahead
Ordering by app or phone, you must be told the price or how it is worked out. As a pre-booking it sits outside the ceiling.
  5. 5
Take the receipt when you get out
A receipt is required for every taxi trip. Take it - it is your only evidence if you need to complain later.

How the meter adds up8

Ceiling on the example fare (10 km, 15 min)

3〜5.18 EUR ≈ $3–6

Estimates use exchange rates as of September 5, 2026

Take one at a rank, hail one, or order by phone or app. Taxis are no longer obliged to be on call, but Traficom's advice to pre-book at quiet times is aimed mainly at rural areas; in towns the average wait was 8 minutes in 2023.

Heads-up

  • Cars in the same rank charge different fares

Fares are set by each company, so cars in the same rank charge different amounts. If a car's example fare - the total for a 10 km, 15-minute trip, shown on the price card on the car's right-hand side - is above 47 euros, it may not charge more than that unless you expressly agree the price, or how it will be calculated, before the ride starts. If there is a dispute over whether a price was agreed, the operator has to prove it was. Being asked to agree a price is itself a sign that this car's price card is a dear one.

Timetable

Typical duration About 30 minutes by car between the city centre and the airport; within the centre a tram is often quicker
