Brussels

A capital radiating from the cobbled Grand-Place. On the metro, trams and buses, tap a bank card and ride.

Tram / premetro (Tram / Prémétro)

18 lines over 150 km, some in underground premetro stations. One tap on the on-board reader buys and validates; the same card caps at 8.50 euros a day. Street stops are request stops - raise a hand or the tram passes.

Trams 4, 10 and 51 cut at Gare du Midi

A concrete slab under place Bara is being replaced, so from 27 April 2026 until the end of April 2027 tram 4 (Gare du Midi to Porte de Hal), tram 10 (Gare du Midi to Churchill) and tram 51 (Lemonnier to Gare du Midi) are interrupted, and tram 81 is replaced by a bus between Marius Renard and Gare du Midi. If you arrive at Gare du Midi on Eurostar, plan on metro 2 or 6, or bus 48, instead of a tram.

How to ride

  1. 1
Sort out your ticket before you board
Paper tickets are not sold on board. Either tap a bank card, or buy at a GO machine or in the app first.
  2. 2
Raise your hand at street-level stops
Street-level stops are request stops - raise your hand as the tram nears. Underground premetro stations are served automatically.
  3. 3
Tap the on-board reader as soon as you board
Tap your ticket or card on the reader inside the tram. With a bank card that single tap both buys and validates the ride.
  4. 4
    Tap again at every transfer
Tap the same card again whenever you change vehicles. Within 60 minutes of the first tap there is no extra charge.
  5. 5
Show the card or phone you paid with
Inspectors want the physical card you paid with. If you paid with a phone, it has to be working when they ask.
  6. 6
Press the stop button before you get off
Press the stop button in good time as your stop comes up, or the driver will go straight past it.

Heads-up

  • On trams, unfolded bikes ride only the low-floor ones

An unfolded bike or kick-scooter can only go on low-floor trams and on the metro - not on high-floor trams and not on buses. On weekdays between 7-9am and 4-6.30pm it cannot go on anything. Folded, it counts as luggage and is always allowed.

  • A phone with a dead battery counts as no ticket

If you paid with a phone wallet, the phone has to be working when an inspector asks. A dead battery means you are treated as having no valid ticket, and the surcharge applies.
