  Metro 5 closed on Sunday mornings

  On Sundays 2 and 30 August, 6 September and 4 and 18 October 2026, metro line 5 is suspended between Erasme/Erasmus and Gare de l'Ouest/Weststation until 12.30 pm and replaced by an M-bus while new signalling is tested. Coming from lines 2 or 6, change to the M-bus at Gare de l'Ouest/Weststation.

How to ride

1. 1

   Sort out your ticket before you board

   You cannot buy a paper ticket on board. Tapping a contactless bank card on the reader is the quickest way in.
2. 2

   Buy paper tickets from a red machine

   Blue machines only top up MOBIB cards. Red machines are also the only ones that take coins.
3. 3

   Tap your card at the gate reader

   Green lights, a beep and "OK" on the screen mean it worked. Red means it did not, and boarding anyway counts as fare evasion.
4. 4

   Tap again at every transfer

   Within 60 minutes of your first validation nothing extra is charged. Above ground, tap again every time you board.

Heads-up

• A dead phone or watch counts as having no ticket

  If you tapped in with a phone or a watch wallet, keep the device working until you are off. Cannot show it to an inspector and you are treated as having no valid ticket, with the surcharge that follows - a flat battery becomes a fine.

• Folded bikes ride anywhere, unfolded face limits

  Your own bike or kick-scooter travels anywhere on the network when fully folded, as it then counts as luggage. Unfolded, it is allowed only on metro trains and low-floor trams (T2000, T3000, T4000), never on weekdays between 7-9 am and 4-6.30 pm, and never on high-floor trams (7700, 7900) or buses.

• Shared bikes and scooters: barred onboard, being withdrawn

  Shared bikes and kick-scooters are barred from STIB stations and vehicles at all times. The shared fleets themselves are also going away - the Council of State annulled their licences on 29 July 2026, free-floating vehicles must be off the streets by 1 September 2026, and shared e-scooters are banned outright from 1 January 2027.
