Ride-hailing & taxis (택시)

There is no private ride-hailing here: Kakao T and Uber both send licensed taxis on meter rates the province sets. The 20% night rate (11pm-4am) and the 20% rate from 20 km add up, so a long night ride runs 40% over.

How to ride

    Call a taxi in an app
    Use Kakao T or Uber. Uber runs on your home account, and its 대절 option charters the cab by the hour.

    Hail one on the street
    Look for the 빈차 (vacant) sign in the windshield and put your hand up.

    Show the destination in Korean
    Show the Korean name on a map app; in Uber, the chat with the driver is translated in real time.

    Pay as you get out
    Pay the metered fare in cash or by card; a card registered in the app is charged automatically.

Heads-up

  • Night and long-distance surcharges add up to 40%

    Jeju adds its surcharges rather than compounding them: 20% between 11pm and 4am, plus 20% once the trip passes 20 km, comes to 40%. A night ride across the island hits both, so a meter climbing faster than it did by day is still the official rate. The night step is 20% on the metered fare itself, while the long-distance step arrives as a higher per-distance rate. The long-distance step applies only to compact and mid-size cabs, not to large ones.

  • Nothing beyond the published items is owed

    Never get in with a driver who touts for you - use a rank or an app - and check the meter is running once you set off. The province publishes only four things: the flagfall, the distance and time charges, the night and long-distance steps, and the call fee. Anything else quoted verbally has no basis. Book in an app and you get a price up front to compare against the meter at the end.
