Only electric or hydrogen rental cars cross to Udo
A rental car whose garage is not registered on Udo cannot be carried across, and nor can a chartered coach or a rented petrol motorbike, moped or e-scooter. The exemption is for what the province calls a class 1 low-emission vehicle - electric or hydrogen - along with electric two-wheelers and 16-seat coaches; no notice puts a hybrid on that list. Cars carrying a disabled, elderly or infant passenger are also exempt. It is the vehicle that is stopped, not you - on foot you board normally. Ask at the port whether the car you hired counts as exempt.
How to ride
- 1Check which port you sail fromMarado has two ports with different operators, Unjin and Songaksan. Udo sails from Seongsan or Jongdal, Biyangdo from Hallim.
- 2Reach the ticket desk 40 minutes beforeUnjin: pre-booked tickets 40 minutes before, all sales close 10 minutes before. Songaksan issues every ticket 30 minutes before.
- 3Hand in the boarding form and your IDEvery adult needs an original photo ID such as a passport - a copy or an image stored on a phone is refused.
- 4Collect the ticket and boardCollect the ticket at the desk and show it at the quay. Sailings are capacity-limited, so a full boat means the next one.

Operating hoursUdo boats leave Seongsan every 30 minutes from 08:00 and run more often in peak season. From Unjin there are four sailings a day to Marado and six to Gapado, the Gapado ones going half-hourly during the barley festival. On its regular timetable Songaksan runs three or four day-trip return sailings, starting at either 09:20 or 10:00, plus one afternoon one-way for people staying the night. Both islands can be booked online up to the day before; on the day itself Unjin sells first-come at the desk and Songaksan takes bookings by phone. Times shift with the season and the weather, so check the operator's page on the day.
Heads-up
-
Copies and phone photos of ID are refused
Ticketing needs a boarding form and an ID for every adult; for a visitor that means the physical passport. A copy, an image saved on a phone and a foreign driving licence that is not an international permit are all refused, while Korea's government mobile ID is accepted. The check is not the operator's discretion but a duty under the Shipping Act enforcement rules, so without it you do not sail.
-
Cancellations are decided on the morning
Whether boats run is settled after 08:00 on the day itself, and rain is not a reason to cancel - wind speed and wave height are. On the day of a crossing, check the live status for the return leg as well before you set out.
-
Bicycles cannot be loaded at Unjin
Boats from Unjin carry no adult bicycle, no kick scooter and no personal mobility device of any kind; children's bikes and scooters are allowed only if they are not electric. Songaksan takes a folding bicycle free as hand baggage, and for Udo you have to ask the operator in advance. Gapado cannot be reached with a bicycle at all; Marado only with a folding bike from Songaksan.
