How to ride

    Buy at a station counter or machine
    Buy at KML's office at Krakow Glowny, from machines at stations and stops, or in an app such as iMKA.

    Pick the ticket type by destination
    The joint 70-minute ticket covers the city and the salt mine; beyond that you need KML's own distance-based single.

    Go straight to the platform
    No gates and no readers. Board without a ticket and an inspection turns into a surcharge.

    No ticket? Board through the first door
    Board through the first door from the front of the train and tell the conductor; staying silent counts as ticketless travel.

    Every train has one. Buy as soon as you are aboard, and go to the conductor if the machine will not work.

Heads-up

  • A city-bought joint ticket needs a conductor's endorsement on the train

    If you buy the joint 70-minute ticket at a KMK sales point or machine and your first ride is the train rather than a tram or bus, go to the conductor once aboard and have it endorsed. They write the train's departure time into the blank space and stamp it. Without that step the ticket is void under the fare conditions, and you are treated as a passenger with no ticket even though you paid. If you start on a city vehicle instead, the usual validation on boarding is enough.

  • Boarding without a ticket? Use the first door

    A passenger without a valid ticket must board through the first door counting from the front of the train and go to the conductor to buy one. Anyone who does not report is treated as travelling ticketless. If you mean to use the on-board machine, buy immediately after boarding and go to the crew if it will not work. The conductor can only take Polish zloty in cash or a payment card - with neither, you are issued a demand for payment plus the surcharge on the spot.

  • Whether another operator's train will take you depends on the operator

    On the sections the two operators run jointly, POLREGIO honours KML's own tickets - the distance-based single, the Taryfa Malopolska tickets, the family ticket - so you can take whichever train comes first on Oswiecim-Nowy Sacz via Trzebinia, Krakow Glowny-Podleze via Nowa Huta, Krakow Glowny-Skawina/Zakopane, Krakow Glowny-Sedziszow and Gorlice-Jaslo. The joint 70-minute ticket is not on that list; see the next caution. With PKP Intercity it is different - the two only accept each other's tickets during disruption, such as a cancellation, a delay of more than 40 minutes or a missed connection. Both operators run towards Zakopane, so using a KML ticket on an Intercity train on a normal day leaves you ticketless.

  • The joint 70-minute ticket is the one that cannot cross to another operator

    The mutual recognition covers KML's own tickets, and the joint 70-minute ticket is not among them. Its fare conditions forbid moving to another operator's train in so many words, so boarding a POLREGIO service makes you a passenger with no ticket. This bites exactly where the two operators run side by side, such as Krakow Glowny to Skawina - a stretch lined with stations the joint ticket does cover, Krakow Bonarka and Krakow Swoszowice among them, so joint-ticket holders are precisely the people standing there. Check whose train has pulled in.
