Athens
Ancient and modern layers meet beneath the Acropolis. Three metro lines link most of the big sights.
Athens Suburban Railway (Proastiakos)
Unlike the metro, this railway takes no contactless bank cards - have a ticket before boarding. Only one airport train an hour runs through to the centre; the rest end at Ano Liosia, so check the destination display.

Heads-up
-
Wildfires and faults cause sudden cancellations
Sudden delays and cancellations from wildfires and technical faults are common - the official announcements page carries them on consecutive days. On the day you fly, check it before you leave your hotel.
-
An OASA ticket covers only part of the suburban line
An OASA ticket only covers the suburban railway between Magoula, Piraeus and Koropi. Ride on to Megara, Corinth, Kiato or Chalkida and you are holding nothing valid for that stretch - and on-board inspections are routine.
