Ancient and modern layers meet beneath the Acropolis. Three metro lines link most of the big sights.

Tap a Visa or Mastercard and you ride — the only brands that work; JCB, Amex and UnionPay are refused; anyone else buys a rechargeable Ath.ena ticket. Where to tap varies: metro gates (exit too), or the validator inside gateless buses and trams — forgetting means a fine. Only the suburban railway takes no card tap: board with a ticket in hand. One 90-minute ticket covers all modes with free transfers. Keep all taps to one card, out of the wallet — stacked cards double-charge. City tickets stop short of the airport; it needs its own fare.
