Careem BIKE

You unlock a docked Careem BIKE from the app, and every bike in Dubai is pedal-assisted. Careem says visitor accounts get only the pay-as-you-go option, and a helmet is required by law.

How to ride

    Choose a payment method in the Careem app
    Open the Bike tab in the app and set Apple Pay or a card you have added as your payment method.

    Scan the QR code at a station
    Pick a nearby station on the app's map and scan the QR code on the bike; stations cover 49 communities, Marina to Downtown.

    Ride in the cycle lane
    Stay on the lanes RTA designates. Roads posted above 60 km/h are off limits, and you must dismount at pedestrian crossings.
  4. 4
    Dock the bike and wait for the green light
    Push it into a free dock and wait for the green light and the buzzer. The trip is not over until it locks.

Heads-up

  • A helmet and a reflective vest are required by law

    A helmet and a reflective vest are legal requirements, and hiring the bike does not change that. Article 6 of Executive Council Resolution No. (13) of 2022 binds every rider of a bicycle, e-bike or e-scooter to the RTA's safety requirements and names the vest and the helmet explicitly. The schedule to the same resolution sets a fine of AED 200 for riding without them; Dubai Police record the offence, and a repeat within a year can have the cycle impounded for 30 days. No official page says a helmet comes with a Careem BIKE, so plan on bringing your own.

  • Renting an e-scooter needs a licence or a permit

    Renting a shared e-scooter starts with showing a licence or a permit. The RTA requires operators to hand over a scooter only to someone who presents a driving licence or an e-Scooter Driving Permit. A valid international driving permit, or a UAE licence, exempts you from needing the RTA permit. Without one you apply for the permit yourself - it is free and open to visitors aged 16 or over, but the application needs a mobile number that can receive the verification code in the UAE. The RTA tells visitors they may enter any UAE mobile number, so it need not be in your own name, though a local SIM or eSIM is the practical route if you travel alone. Riding with neither licence nor permit costs AED 200, issued by Dubai Police, and scooters are confined to the districts and lanes the RTA designates.

  • End the ride at a dock and wait for the green light

    The only place a ride ends is a dock, and tapping in the app will not end it. Careem's rules require the bike to be returned to a designated station and docked correctly, and warn that an e-bike left unattended or unsecured can draw a penalty of AED 3,000. Pushing it in is only half the action - wait for the green light and the buzzer. If the dock is full, ride on to a station that has space.
