Dubai

A city of skyscrapers on a desert coast. The metro runs driverless; the boat across the creek costs one dirham.

One nol card is all you need on the metro, tram and buses - there is no tapping in with a bank card at the gate. Buy the card at station machines or counters, which take cash. Tap out when you leave or you are charged for the longest ride; changes within thirty minutes count as one journey. On Sundays the metro starts late. Trains carry a women-and-children carriage and a double-fare Gold Class, and the wrong car draws a fine. The wooden abras across the Creek are the one cash-only holdout. Refunds are slow - use up the balance before you fly.
