Taichung
The hub of central Taiwan. Rail here means a single metro line, so most journeys fall to the city buses.
The MRT is one line, the Green Line, so city buses carry most trips. Get a stored-value card such as an EasyCard. On buses tap on and tap off; a missed tap-off locks the card out of distance-fare buses only. The much-quoted free 10 km is for residents and a few local groups, not visitors. Contactless cards and QR codes open only the wide accessible gate by the MRT info desk. The metro skips Taichung Station: a TRA local train from Xinwuri, next to the HSR station, takes about 15 minutes. The airport has no rail, only buses and taxis.
