Budapest

Buda and Pest face each other across the Danube. The M1 metro has run since 1896 — continental Europe's oldest.

Budapest has no stored-value transit card. Buy a ticket first, paper or in the BudapestGO app, and validate as you board - unstamped means no ticket. Bank-card tap works only at metro entrances and the 100E airport bus, Visa and Mastercard only; trams and buses carry no readers. Singles transfer only metro to metro; the rest needs the app-only 30- and 90-minute tickets or the stamp-free 24- and 72-hour travelcards. The 100E takes only its own ticket - travelcards and singles are invalid; the cheap route, 200E plus M3, takes ordinary tickets.
